Jenny’s Place domestic violence and homelessness service is gearing up for its annual Empowered Walk this November.
This year the Empowered Walk will follow a six-kilometer scenic route along the picturesque harbour, aiming to shine a spotlight on the prevalence and impact of domestic and family violence, not only in our immediate community but also beyond our borders.
The walk gives locals the opportunity to recognize the immense courage displayed by hundreds of local women who bravely escape violence each year while raising money to help Jenny’s Place continue their life-changing work.
“For almost half a century Jenny’s Place has been supporting women and children impacted by domestic and family violence and unfortunately, the issue continues to escalate,” Marcia Chapman, Executive Manager at Jenny’s Place said.
“Over the last five years, our city recorded a 5.3% increase in reported domestic assaults and sadly, we know this rate is far higher with many assaults unreported to police.
“We need to lift the volume on this issue if we are to see meaningful social and systemic change and so we invite the community to join us on November 26 to walk together, to share, to understand, and to help break the cycle of domestic and family violence.”

Jenny’s Place plays a vital role in assisting over 1,000 local women in leaving domestic violence situations each year. Their services encompass emergency relief, crisis and transitional accommodation, Outreach casework, and a range of specialized programs aimed at empowering women to live safe, independent lives, free from violence and coercive control.
The Empowered Walk is open to everyone, including families and furry friends, corporate teams, and individual walkers.
Walkers are invited to start their day with a hearty breakfast and a steaming cup of coffee at the starting and fuel up at the emPowered Walk BBQ and finishing line celebration featuring fun tattoos and face painting for the kids, a DJ spinning some tracks to keep the party going, and an exciting raffle.
The Jenny’s Place Empowered Walk is happening on Sunday 26 November 2023. Community members can register now at empowered.jennysplace.org.
