UoN Musos are back and bringing Broadway’s golden age to life with The Drowsy Chaperone, a toe-tapping, laugh-out-loud musical coming to the Civic Theatre Playhouse.

Packed with big brass, fast-paced comedy, and dazzling dance numbers, this award-nominated student theatre group promises another crowd-pleasing hit.

Set in the roaring 1920s, The Drowsy Chaperone tells the story of a quirky theatre fan whose favourite record literally bursts into life in his apartment.

As the glamorous Janet Van De Graaff prepares to give up stardom for love, chaos ensues with gangsters disguised as pastry chefs, a jittery best man, a lothario with a flair for the dramatic, and, of course, a delightfully drowsy chaperone.

The show-within-a-show format offers a witty and heartfelt commentary on the joy of musical theatre itself, as the Man in Chair guides the audience through a world where romance is exaggerated, characters break into song, and every problem can be solved with a tap dance.

It’s a high-energy homage to the vintage charm and ridiculous fun of Broadway’s past.

You can catch The Drowsy Chaperone at the Civic Theatre Playhouse 15-18 May 2025. Tickets are available now via civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.
