Seth Sentry is now regarded as one of Australia’s premier rappers, with an iconic voice as warm and familiar as a hug from an old mate. We did a Q and A with Seth ahead of his show at the Cambridge Hotel on March 12.
What sort of show are you brining to Newcastle? Is it just you and your DJ or have you got a few surprises for us?
Seth: A very excited Seth Sentry & DJ Sizzle back at it after a long break. A whole new show from the ground up. Bunch of new songs & of course the friends Coin Banks & Citizen Kaye.
During the 90’s the hip hop scene in Australia was still quite an underground affair, why do you think Australia has fallen love with hip hop in the last decade?
Seth: Because it’s really come into it’s own, it has it’s own identity now. There are sub genres & regional differences from state to state. Plus, you know, the hoods.
Your press release describes you as “A humble guy from humble beginnings”. Humility is not something that is often associated with Hip Hop. What do you do differently?
Seth: I just be me I guess. Sometimes I brag on a track & sometimes I’m self deprecating. I try not to overthink that part of it.
How do you stay healthy and keep your head together with such a heavy touring schedule?
Seth: I try to get myself “tour ready” & fit as the tour approaches. Try to eat pretty healthy on the road these days. Lots of coffee is also essential.
Are you still a smoker and do you think that influences your outlook on life and your art?
Seth: Yeah still smoke pot although not as heavily as I once did. I think smoking definitely assisted in shaping the way I view the world. Being high forces you to look from different angles.
How do you feel about people remixing your stuff, or adding it to their holiday videos and sharing what they’ve created online?
Seth: I’m flattered, go for it
How do you know when a beat is right for you and your Rhymes?
Seth: When i play it & I instantly get a story in my head. Even just a strong a picture that I can write about.
