INTERVIEW: Rapunzel from Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream

The beautiful Rapunzel from Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream made a quick visit to Newcastle to see the sights and sounds before she returns in June for three big shows at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre. We were lucky enough to get the chance to sit down with the Disney Princess for a quick chat…

Princess Rapunzel, it’s so great to get to talk to you. Thank you for taking the time to speak with Newcastle Live.

Oh sure, it’s my pleasure – meeting new people is one of my very favourite things to do. That might have something to do with the fact I spent the first 18 years or so of my life living in a tower in the forest, but…

About that, what was it like the first time you left your tower?

Thrilling and terrifying, wonderful and horrible, amazing and, and… let’s just say it was the best day ever! You just don’t really appreciate the way grass feels under your feet until you experience it, I mean truly experience it for the first time.

And now that you’re back home and living in the castle, what do you like to do?

Believe it or not, all the stuff I used to do when I was in the tower except for one big difference: other people! Painting? Yes. Group classes are so much fun. Playing guitar? You bet. I think I might be playing in at least 3 or 4 groups right now. Chess? You can’t stop me. Did you know they have chess clubs?! It’s true. And playing chess with other people is so much better than playing by yourself.

Do you have a favourite subject to paint?

Hmm… not really… but I do like to paint the sky, especially when it’s full of floating lanterns. I’d probably paint my chameleon, Pascal, more but he doesn’t like to hold still and when he does, he has this habit of blending in to the background…

I’m glad you mentioned the lanterns. Can you tell me a little about the Lantern Festival?

The Lantern Festival? Of course. You see, after I was taken as a baby, my parents would light floating lanterns and send them into the sky every year on my birthday, hoping that someday I’d find my way home. And I did! From my tower window I saw the most beautiful floating lights and somehow I knew they were for me. Now that I’ve come back home, we light the floating lanterns to celebrate every year! But not only do we light lanterns, oh no, we make them, paint them, sing songs about them… It’s a pretty great way to celebrate a birthday, really.

And finally, what advice do you have for little girls who look up to you and your achievements?

Gosh, do little girls really look up to me? That’s… well, that’s very flattering. I mean, I guess in my own life the things that have gotten me the farthest are curiosity and a kind of bravery. I love learning about new things, meeting new people, and going after my dreams. If there’s something you want more than anything else, first find out all you can about it and then go and get it.
