For the first time in Australia, Pearl the Janis Joplin Show will tour a production about a rock immortal whose individuality became a hallmark that both shocked and inspired a generation. The show stops into Lizotte’s in Lambton on Saturday the 16th of May. We chatted to the leading lady, Liza Ohlback who’s often compared to Aretha Franklin and Etta James.
When do you first recall hearing Janis Joplin?
I didn’t know much about her till I saw Woodstock in about 1974 I bought Pearl…I was blown out that a woman could sing like that, I found her a bit overwhelming but exciting!!!!
In a era where music styles come and go in the blink of an eye what do you think it is about Blues and Soul music that makes it everlasting?
The passion, The history, everyone relates to it, feels it. Especially Blues which digs deep into your soul and makes you feel like someone out there understands what you feel? And Soul has all the sweet Harmonies originating from Black Gospel music and Melodies you can’t get out of your head!! But mainly The emotion of it all – The Human Music!!
Do you have a favourite part of the Janis show? What is it and why?
I guess I love the first song…Stay with me – the initial reaction of the audience – the reconnecting to her music again – very gratifying….
How do you get into the emotional space to be able to deliver the passionate performance that Janis was known for every night?
I find that easy… the songs, the lyrics and Melodies, the atmosphere( a dynamic band)- it’s all there you can’t help but get involved with them…I feel like they are my own songs..I have always felt it is important to connect with songs and as Janis said ” Sing with as much feeling as possible.”. Move Over was the first song I ever sang with a Band!!!
How do you keep your voice healthy on tour?
I don’t smoke, or drink I try and keep healthy and of course I warm up and down…..Janis’s songs are hard work!!!
