Gleny Rae Virus and her Playboys – Dougie Bull and Roy Payne – are taking a leaf from the book of Ray Charles by experimenting with modern sounds within an old genre. We caught a set from Gleny at The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel with Robbie Long on lead guitar a few weeks ago and sat down for a chat to talk about the National Folk Festival, song writing and whether she thinks music can still make a social change.

Using traditional instrumentation, this energetic trio starts with hillbilly swing then moves seamlessly through gypsy jazz, bluegrass, western and blues. Add a good dose of cheeky innuendo and some tales from Gleny’s western NSW upbringing.
