The stories from the Hunter’s lost pubs live on

For more than 40 years Ed Tonks has been actively teaching, researching, and promoting aspects of the Hunter’s history as well as delivering or conducting more than 800 talks for service clubs, community groups, and professional bodies.

Ed says that Newcastle’s lost suburban hotels now live on only in memories but Newcastle’s earliest suburban pubs were meeting places for mining unionists to organise for better working conditions or were backdrops for 19th-century political rallies.

Listen back for a walk down memory lane including tales of hastily-convened inquests being held in the pub because cellars were the best place to keep a body cold!
