A few weeks ago we went to check out Barrio, the Spanish tapas restaurant in Mayfield that everyone is talking about. Our #protip is to book ahead for Barrio because everyone who’s talking about it is also there eating and drinking. So book ahead or you may find yourself, like us, left out in the cold looking for another option.
As our empty bellies made their way towards The Stag & Hunter for the Mereweather Fats Blues Jam, we remembered that Steve Graham had told his KOFM listeners that Ho Wah Chinese Restaurant on the main street of Mayfield was his favourite spot for a succulent Chinese meal. Who were we to ignore such a recommendation?
Entering an empty restaurant is always a gamble, but armed with our Newcastle celebrity endorsement we confidently walked in and asked our hosts for a table for two. We ordered a couple of beers and a mixed entree each as we looked through the extensive menu.
During the short wait between entree and drinks arriving, our main orders were taken and we noticed a steady stream of takeaways being picked up. A lot of people who came to pick up their takeaway were on a first name basis with the staff who greeted each customer with a personal quip or a laugh.
Still the only table in the restaurant, our mains arrived along with a bowl of chilli we had requested as a condiment. We soon found that this small bowl of soy and finely sliced yellow chilli meant business. A small teaspoon over the top of our first mouthful of pork San Choy Bow AND BOOM – Flavour, crispy lettuce and knockout heat all in one mouthful. It was glorious and we immediately were high fiving to Steve G’s recommendation.
Our Szechuan Beef was also a tender punch to the mouth. The beef was cooked perfectly and the sauce was just how it should be. Accompanied by a plate of the standard fried rice, we couldn’t help but feel we had done pretty well for ourselves considering the earlier disappointment.
We’re not saying this is a Michelin star establishment, we’re not even saying this is the best restaurant in Mayfield, but we can confirm that Steve G was right, it’s a bloody fantastic feed and you should put in on your list the next time you’re craving a succulent Chinese meal in Mayfield.
