If you’re looking for a great day out that’s all for a good cause, then Maitland’s Family Hotel is the place to be this Sunday – especially if you’re a fan of the reality show juggernaut Married at First Sight.
That’s because the venue will be hosting Concert for a Cure, an event that aims to raise much-needed funds for Hunter Valley teenager Johey Basedow and his family, this Sunday and 2019 MAFS star Nic Jovanovic will be there to help out.
14-year old Johey, from Pelaw Main, has a rare form of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours (DSRCT).
There are no experienced doctors in Australia, so the family was left with little option but to upheave their life with a hope to save their son’s = heading to the US for life-saving surgery.
When local all-girl trio Pretty Irresistible heard about the Basedow’s plight, they they wanted to do what they could.
“I wanted to donate to the Basedow’s and was thinking about ways to increase my donation,” bass player Emma Cagney said.
“When I put it to the band, they were quick to come on board!”
With the trio providing an afternoon of all-killer tunes – thing all-girl hits from the ’60s to now – the swoon factor, no doubt, will be provided Nic Jovanovic who will be on hosting duties throughout the day.
The Newcastle-based Nic has been personally touched by the disease – having overcome two bouts of testicular cancer.
“I was sorry to hear about the illness Johey was going through,” he said.
“Happy to do anything to help a local.”
The day will also feature raffles and merchandise offering other ways for people to donate to this worthy cause while Family Hotel staff kindly offered the venue for free, meaning all proceeds from the day can be donated directly to the family.
The Concert for a Cure is on at The Family Hotel, Maitland from 12pm on Sunday 1 December. Head here for tickets and more info.
