There are so many incredible local charities in Newcastle, full of wonderful people providing help and support to those who need it most. Although passionate volunteers provide time and resources to the cause, all charities rely on the financial generosity of others. Thanks to an incredible $13,000 donation from Newcastle Permanent, Newcastleโ€™s favourite homegrown cause Got Ya Back Sista, have recently launched their new initiative The Empowerment Circle.

Led by a registered counsellor, participants learn skills such as resilience, self-care and kindness to self and others as a way to rebuild their lives after experiencing domestic violence. But as well as learning essential skills, thereโ€™s the community aspect of the program which provides women with the opportunity to engage with other women in situations similar to their own.

โ€œThe Empowerment Circle is a chance for women like me who have experienced domestic violence to come together and share our stories, talk about issues weโ€™re facing or particular emotional struggles weโ€™re having,โ€ Empowerment Circle participant Frankie says.

โ€œWhatโ€™s empowering about it is that you walk away feeling like youโ€™re normal, and what youโ€™re going through is not exclusive to you but common amongst survivors. I always feel a huge sense of relief after Iโ€™ve been and I take away a lesson or something new every time.โ€

Which is exactly why the commitment and generosity from the Newcastle Permanent cannot be understated. Without the recent funding, it would be near impossible for Got Ya Back Sista to provide much needed programs and resources like The Empowerment Circle to people who need them most.

Every year Newcastle Permanent employees provide over $50,000 in donations to local charities through the companyโ€™s CommunityAssist Employee Deduction Program. Kirsten Lyndon, Manager, Partnerships and Community Engagement at Newcastle Permanent, said Got Your Back Sista was a popular choice for employees to put their donation towards.

โ€œWe love that Got Your Back Sista provides the tools for people to take care of themselves, all while creating a strong sense of togetherness to show that no one needs to be alone,โ€ said Ms Lyndon.

โ€œThe Empowerment Circle gives all participants a chance to develop vital life skills and build community, for free, in a safe space, with an experienced professional leading the way.โ€

Melissa Histon, Founder and CEO of Got Your Back Sista, recently spoke to Newcastle Live of her gratitude for the continued financial support from Newcastle Permanent Employees.

โ€œWe are so grateful to every Newcastle Permanent employee who donated. Because of their donations, we can ensure we continue to have a professional councillor facilitate these sessions, which is of enormous benefit for our clients.โ€
