Despite concerns over COVID-19, an estimated 5000 people flooded the Newcastle CBD on Saturday to protest institutionalised racism and black deaths in custody.

The peaceful protest was one of many held around the country over the long weekend, sparked by the wave of protests sweeping the United States in the wake of the death at the hands of Minneapolis police of African American man George Floyd.

Kicking off at Pacific Park with a raft of impassioned and emotive speeches, the protesters, flanked by a heavy police presence, marched through the Hunter Street Mall, concluding at Civic Park.
