FROM NASHVILLE TO NEWY: Gleny Rae Virus and her Playboys are back in town with a new release

Friday, 23 November at the Stag and Hunter Hotel

A country girl with an international heart. That’s Newcastle’s Gleny Rae Virus. The multi-instrumentalist and educator who passionately believes music can build community and improve lives, is back in town after a trip to Nashville and she’s gota swag on new songs to play from her new record, Diggin a Hole.

Friday, 23 November at the Stag and Hunter Hotel

Joining Gleny Rae Virus for this CD launch tour is her talented buddy and adopted little brother Archer. Think old-time sing-song man.

Archer is like an old-world Bollywood movie star; he lives his art and his life is a song. He goes to great lengths to find old songs and write timeless melodies. He sings up the land and its people, its animals and robot machines. He has been flat out touring nursing homes and ice-cream shops and gutters and fancy national and international venues. If you went out into the middle of nowhere you would most likely find him lying under a rock writing a song about a lizard.

Adversity can be a potent muse, seeping deep into the psyche of a songwriter

Gleny Rae Virus experienced this first hand in 2017, as she put her Alzheimer’s afflicted mother into full-time care whilst rebuilding herself from the breakdown of a long-term relationship.

Inspired by this notion and following her songwriter’s heart, Gleny Rae Virus took the troubadour path by launching into a number of new creative projects, culminating in the recording of an album to clear out the past!

Diggin’ A Hole

Diggin’ A Hole is the result; a stripped back, string-laden journey through lust, loss, environmental protest and female bushrangers! The album was recorded across three studios in between touring, then pulled together and engineered by Newcastle musical guru Robbie Long. Gleny Rae Virus is known for her eclectic approach to roots music and this album is no exception. It features some of Australia’s finest bluegrass musicians including Pete Fidler on dobro and Jenny Shimmin on banjo, but takes the listener on a winding trail through hillbilly jazz and gypsy swing. A recent trip to the USA inspired an additional track, recorded with some of Nashville’s finest musicians.
