LIGHT IT UP: Float Your Boat hits Lake Mac this weekend

A boat disguised as a high-performance aerobatic plane and a water taxi transformed into an illuminated road cab are just two of the boats set to light up the lake at this weekend’s Float Your Boat festival.

This year’s weekend will include a range of shore-based activities, with live sites at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Toronto on Friday night and Warners Bay on Saturday.

Both the Toronto and Warners Bay live-sites will run from 6:00 pm until 9:30 pm and feature local musicians and performers, entertainment, food trucks and children’s activities.

A boat decked out with thousands of lights projecting a high-performance aerobatic plane ready to compete in the World Air Race will lead the flotilla on both nights

“Our lake is a giant stage that attracts amazing events to our region on the water and soon to be in the air with the Word Air Race here in November,” Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said.

The boat is one of 22 taking part in the two-day festival, with a red kangaroo, sea eagle, spaceship, tiger and a cowboy riding a marlin also set to float on water.

Sam Luker from Trinity Point Water Taxi said his team would be transforming their water taxi into an illuminated road taxi for the event.

“Ideally, we will have glowing wheels that propel as they hit the water,” Mr Luker said.

“This is the first time we will be using the water taxi at the event, which will be great to be part of the community.”

Boats participating in Float Your Boat will be in the running to win a $2000 Newcastle Permanent People’s Choice Award, a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels 5-10m, and a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels over 10m.

“The weather is looking exceptional with two sunny days forecast for Friday and Saturday, so I am encouraging families and friends to come out and enjoy all Float Your Boat has to offer,” Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said.

The Float Your Boat festival will take over the lake on Friday 24 June and Saturday 25 June. You can check out our ultimate guide to this year’s event here and head to for event updates.
