After being run aground in 2020, the Float Your Boast festival is back, promising, once again, to bathe Lake Macquarie in glorious colour!
Running over two nights, from Friday 18 June to Saturday 19 June, the festival will feature a flotilla of painstakingly decorated vessels that will cruise the western edge of the Lake on Friday, before showcasing the dazzling display on the eastern edge on Saturday.
With COVID scuttling proceedings last year, all signs point to this year’s event being bigger and better than ever. And with more than 20,000 people checking out the festival in 2019, that looks to be pretty big!
Aside from the colourful aquatic displays, this year’s festival will also include a range of shore-based activities, with a Friday night live-site at Toronto Foreshore, a community event at Wangi, and another live-site at Warners Bay on Saturday night.
Both the Toronto and Warners Bay live-sites will run from 5.30pmto -9.30pm, featuring live music and entertainment, magic shows, illuminated art installations children’s activities, and food trucks.
Meanwhile, the Wangi RSL live-site will run 6pm to 9pm and feature live music, creative workshops and a community bonfire.
The eye-popping visuals will be further enhanced this year, with Council commissioning a trio of local artists, including Bliss Cavanagh to bedeck three vessels in themed lighting.
“The inspiration for this work is drawn from the natural beauty of the lake and the magical world that lies under the sea,” Bliss said of her lighting concept.
“I want to bring this world to light in a fun and colourful way to give joy to the people watching from shore.”
Boats participating in Float Your Boat will be in the running to win a $2000 People’s Choice Award, a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels 5-10m, and a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels over 10m.
Fans can go in the running to win a $100 gift card by casting a vote for their favourite boat following the weekend’s action.
