SEEING RED, AS A PART OF HUNTER RED

26 MAY – 1 JUL 2018

Newcastle has a long history of community and political activism. According to the University of Newcastle Labour history archives, by 1880 Newcastle had become “the very hotbed of radicalism and ultra-democratic notions”. From the early trade union and grassroots Labour movements, to women’s liberation, environmental activism and Indigenous land rights, the Hunter Region has been a site of advocacy and activism.

SEEING RED takes this history as its cue to delve into notions of protest and the diversity of causes: from the local to the national, the personal to the political. Through installation, video, sculpture, site-specific action, intervention and performance the exhibition at The Lock-Up will explore the idea of ‘”seeing red”. The exhibition will include new artist commissions, loaned works and material history objects.

Artists include David Burgess, Dale Collier, Dean Cross, David Griggs, Maggie Hensel-Brown, Tina Havelock Stevens, Doug Heslop, Baden Pailthorpe, Mike Parr, Raquel Ormella, Peter Speight and Mumu Mike Williams. SEEING RED also includes material from the Newcastle Local History Library.

Curated by Madeleine Kelman-Snow and Courtney Novak.

ABOUT HUNTER RED

Hunter Red is a project driven by the Hunter Cultural Collective, a partnership between The Lock-Up, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Newcastle Art Gallery. Through the project, associated cultural institutions unpack the idea that the region is simply represented by a glass of Hunter Red, delving into complex curatorial responses across each site.

The project and partnership aims to tell the stories of our region, our collections and our institutions in unexpected ways, shifting perspectives while building and sharing audiences.

The project includes exhibitions, events, performances and public programs across all partner venues.
