NTC Presents Postcards from Kafka

Newcastle Theatre Company
90 De Vitre Street, Lambton, NSW, 2299

Australian academic Marcus Murray is visiting Prague with his wife, Jocelyn and their 20-year old daughter, Maddie. He is hoping to broker a deal with a couple of Czech post-graduate students who claim to have come across a cache of unpublished papers belonging to Franz Kafka. While Jocelyn and Maddie take in the sights and have adventures of their own, Murray finds himself in a Kafkaesque nightmare of bureaucracy, police corruption and extortion where his life is at stake. In a parallel universe, Kafka is enjoying a rare, happy time in his life, living in Berlin with Dora Diamont. Though not in the best of health, Kafka is in love and writing: short stories, letters and postcards. The past and present collide with farcical and lifechanging consequences.
Postcards from Kafka is a dark comedy that explores both Kafka’s legacy as a writer and his suffering as a human being against the lens of modern-day tourism and its appropriation of creativity. What does the artist owe the world and vice versa and where does the hapless professor with his eye on academic glory, fit in?
