New Year’s Eve 2017 Program

Prepare for a night of family friendly fun, with toe-tapping music, awe-inspiring entertainment, mouth-watering food, mind-blowing fireworks and a larger-than-life labyrinth this New Year’s Eve.

NYE 2017 will be located on the Newcastle Harbour, with the heart of the event around the Queens Wharf precinct.


Launched from Griffiths Park, Stockton, this year’s fireworks will be bigger and brighter to cap off the night’s festivities in style.



Get ready to groove with a line-up of fantastic bands, including Throw Me To The Wolves, The Venom Lips, Floyd Vincent and the iconic Aussie band Mental As Anything.

5.45pm Throw Me To The Wolves,
6.20pm The Venom Lips
7.00pm Floyd Vincent and theTemple Dogs
8.00pm Mental As Anything.


Roving performers will entertain and amaze you. Make your own colourful lantern and join in our special lantern parade to herald in the fireworks.

Take a journey through our illuminated labyrinth full of vibrant surprises on the Revitalising Newcastle Family Fun Zone. Draw on your inner creativity and help us decorate the labyrinth on the night. Add your new year’s resolution to our spectacular Resolution Tree to help your 2018 dreams come true.

Access and road closures

Road Closures – Sunday 31 December 2017

  • Wharf Road (Watt Street to Argyle Street) 6am to 11pm
  • Wharf Road (Merewether Street to Argyle) 6am to 11pm
  • Honeysuckle Drive (Worth Place Round A-Bout to Merewether Street) 6am to 11pm

Note: Resident and Business access 6am to 3pm only. If you need to arrange an access pass please email the event Project Manager Samantha Willcox.

Plan your NYE with public transport and road closure information

Coming to enjoy fireworks and festivities for NYE this year?  You can make your Newcastle NYE even better with a little planning for the event.

Park and Ride

Take out the parking hassles and park, ride and relax! The free park and ride service is available from 4.30pm to 10.30pm, with buses running between McDonald Jones Stadium at Broadmeadow and Scott Street (the old Newcastle Train Station). Buses will run on a continuous loop throughout the event.

The park and ride service is generously provided by Revitalising Newcastle.


The Mall Parking Station will be open with free parking until 10.30pm.

The Civic Park West and Bolton Street Carparks will provide parking at a flat fee of $3 from 5pm on NYE to 8am 1 January.

Road closures

There’ll be road closures on Sunday 31 December 2017:

  • Wharf Road (Watt Street to Argyle Street) 6am to 11pm
  • Wharf Road (Merewether Street to Argyle) 6am to 11pm
  • Honeysuckle Drive (Worth Place Round A-Bout to Merewether Street) 6am to 11pm

Ride your Bike

What better way to get around on a warm summer night than on your bike! A bike valet service will be available from 5 – 10pm next to Lynches Hub. Places are limited but you can pre-book a spot online at You can even pre-order a picnic hamper via the booking page which will be ready to pick-up when you drop your bike off.

Remember its .05% BAL on a bike too.  Please don’t drink and ride.
