A DOSE OF NATURE FOR UNPAID CARERS TO HELP IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH & WELLBEING
Unpaid carers across the Hunter are being encouraged to join a new program that provides them with the opportunity to be outdoors, stay active, connect with nature and become part of a social and supportive community network.
Thanks to funding support from nib foundation, the award-winning Green Gym program from the UK will be available free of charge to unpaid carers from February 2018.
Conservation Volunteers Australia Mr Steve Travers, said the program improves carers’ health and wellbeing by reducing stress and being physically active outdoors in a beautiful setting.
“This is a great opportunity for carers to learn new skills and help improve our environment while enjoying friendly social interaction with their peers,” Mr Travers said.
“Carers understand the demands of caring best, that’s why this program aims to bring Carers together in a positive program where they support each other as they come together for healthy exercise in nature,” he added.
Conservation Volunteers’ qualified Team Leader guides up to nine carers per session through activities at one of Newcastle’s most idyllic locations, Glenrock State Conservation Area. Featuring practical activities such as planting trees, removing invasive species and improving nature trails, the eco-friendly activities aim to reduce social isolation and improve physical and mental wellbeing.
nib foundation Executive Officer, Amy Tribe said the Green Gym was a great way to improve the lives of local carers by combining health and fitness with conservation.
“We know that caring can be incredibly rewarding, yet highly demanding both physically and mentally. As such, more than one third of Carers experience severe or extreme stress due to the demands associated with caring,” Mrs Tribe said.
“By supporting programs such as Green Gym, we can help Carers live healthier lives by encouraging them to better look after their own physical and mental health,” she said.
Suitable for people of varying fitness levels and abilities, the Green Gym will run for 12 weeks starting on Wednesday 28 February 2018. Morning sessions run from 9:00am – 12:00pm with afternoon sessions from 1.00pm – 4:00pm. Transport is available from Broadmeadow Train Station.
Bookings are essential as team numbers are limited. Please contact our office 02 4961 2358 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more about the Newcastle Green Gym.
