‘Cuplet’ brings master wordsmiths to Newcastle

On the evening of August 15, Newcastle will be host to some of Australia’s finest and most critically acclaimed poets at the launch of cuplet, Newcastle’s newest monthly poetry night, featuring touring and local poets as well as a short open mic section.

The launch will be held at The Beaumont, Hamilton – the class-oozing cafe bar which plays host ot regular pianists and drag bingo.

August’s launch event is going to be stacked with a huge lineup of contemporary Australian poets: AJ Carruthers, Amelia Dale, Toby Fitch, Emily Stewart and locals David Musgrave and Anupama Pilbrow, alongside prize-winning Dutch poet Maarten Van Der Graaf.

These will be followed by emerging local artists Theodore Stein, Sophia Flegg and David Graham, who runs the popular local event Word Hurl Anti-Slam.

Time permitting, there will also be a brief open mic section with very limited spaces at the end of the night. Budding poets are encouraged to arrive early to secure a slot.

The creator behind this event is Claire Albrecht, a poet currently writing her PhD under the supervision of Keri Glastonbury at the University of Newcastle.

“I got tired of having to make the trip to Sydney or Melbourne to see these bigger touring names,”

Claire says. “It’s a long way to go, and anyone who has taken the train trip back to Newcastle late at night knows how unpleasant it can be.”

Claire regularly attends some of Newcastle’s other poetry nights, which encourage an open atmosphere and occasionally bring touring poets to receptive audiences.

“The Press Book House (on Hunter Street) has some fantastic nights with great poets, and events like Heart Open, Girls on Key, Word Hurl Anti-Slam and Poetry at the Pub are wonderful,” she says.

“I just wanted to start an event that was a regular feature in Newcastle’s cultural calendar.”

“I was at Toby Fitch’s ‘Avant Gaga’ monthly poetry night at Sappho Books in Glebe when I realised that I wanted to make something like this happen in Newcastle. As soon as I got back home the next day, I designed the logo and started talking to poets.”

“I’m so happy with the response it has received,” she says. “All these published, successful poets I have been talking to are excited to come to Newcastle and share their work with our blooming poetry scene.”

This new event is currently unfunded, so for this huge launch event, attendees will be asked to give a $10 donation in order to pay the artists for their time and energy.

For anyone who is feeling generous, there is also the opportunity to ‘Sponsor a Poet’ for $50. In order to pledge this valuable contribution, interested individuals can email cupletpoetry@gmail. com.

“They’ll also get the bonus of the best seat in the house!” says Claire.

Got a business and want to sponsor artist fees for the whole event? “Cuplet won’t turn you away,” she laughs. “We’d be thrilled to have a sponsor or partner business for the event – especially one that prides itself on supporting contemporary Australian writing.”
