Hey, what are your plans tonight? I mean like do you have any actual plans not just you sitting at home watching Netflix or illegally pirating that Game of Thrones episode that was on last night. Apparently I missed the memo re: the word’s obsession with this TV show. Anyway, if you don’t have any actual plans tonight, or even if you do cancel them, and lets get #cultured. Wonderful individuals Alex Morris and Chloe Warren have curated an event that I am really hoping will, as they suggest, become a regular feature on the Newcastle calendar.
Of course, I am talking about Heart Open: A female focused open mic night featuring a whole host of feature artists set to light our cultured selves on fire. A self described “evening of spoken word, music and visual arts aimed at celebrating some of our wonderful creative women of the Hunter,” which is something I am oh so totally on board with. There are so many talented individuals here in Newcastle, writing, creating, playing, singing, drawing, and just being oh so incredibly creative, but they are often hidden away in dark corners of bars or lurking for far too long at the Press Book House. What I also love about this event of course, is the focus on the amazing women in our community. That’s important.
Chloe and Alex have scoured the community and invited five very talented feature creatives; visual artist Haley Papasavvas, musician Eddy Tolhurst, poet Janette Hoppe, comedian Elena Terol and dancer Hannah Indigo and presented a stage and a platform for these amazing performers to do what it is they do best. Best of all ladies and gentlemen, it’s at the Grain Store, what more could you want?
I will be there, I may even spin a poem or two, probably about other people, who knows, it might even be about you. Everything kicks off at around 6:00pm so be there or be square, or do both. Whichever floats your boat.
