McDonald Jones Stadium will play host to the local leg of Elton John’s upcoming international tour next year.
The January 2023 show will be the first time the stadium has hosted a concert in 32 years and Elton’s first concert in Newcastle.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Elton John concert was a coup for the city and just one example of the diverse major events the new partnership is looking to achieve.
“Newcastle is once again showing Australia and the world that we’re a global events city, attracting one of the biggest names in music, Elton John, to play a stadium concert in front of thousands of cheering Novocastrians and tourists,” Cr Nelmes said.
By the end of the farewell tour, the superstar musician will have played 233 concerts in Australia, the third most for any country outside the United Kingdom and America.
The tour is part of a massive celebration of an incredible 50-year career for one of music’s most enduring performers.
“This is an incredibly exciting result for Newcastle, and just a taste of the major events to come for the region,” Venues NSW and McDonald Jones Stadium CEO Kerrie Mather said.
Elton John will play McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Tuesday 10 January 2023. Tickets for the licensed all-ages concert go on sale Monday 1 August at 1 pm local time. More information about pre-sale tickets can be found here.
