It’s time to get your skates on because the Newcastle Roller Derby League will kick off its popular series of home games for 2019 next weekend.
The monthly games feature local skaters and their guests competing in Newcastle themed teams – The Fort Smashleys, The Bogey Rollers and The Harbour Hellcats – and will conclude with a highly anticipated grand final in September.
League representative Zoe Hennessey, who skates under the moniker Moxie Monoxide, says that the teams have each gathered a significant following over the last few years, and the league hopes to further increase crowd sizes in 2019.
“People come to our games for the first time not really knowing what to expect, but they soon find an affinity with a team or a particular skater and become dedicated fans,” she said.
“We adore the support and find it helps create a wonderful atmosphere for our events.”
Newcastle Roller Derby League recently celebrated its tenth anniversary by updating its logo and completed an apprenticeship to become affiliated with the world-wide governing body for roller derby, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
