Newcastle’s fecund arts and cultural scene will be the focus of a new festival that is set to become a a cornerstone of the Novocastrian social calendar.
The 10-day festival, dubbed New Annual, will kick off on 12 February 2021, featuring a dizzying array of live music, dance, art exhibitions, talks and activation events around the city.
You can also be rest assured that the festival will showcase the city in the best possible light given the inaugural theme of illumination.
Designed with the flexibility to operate as a COVID Safe event depending on Public Health Orders, New Annual will be held at a variety of locations with the ability to help keep crowd numbers dispersed, utilising council-owned facilities, public spaces, private venues, community hubs and performance spaces.
“Supporting and delivering cultural and community programs, events and live music is key to progressing our vision of Newcastle as a smart, liveable and sustainable global city,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.
“Planning for this event has allowed us to keep important funds and support flowing into the sector by engaging more than 40 local artists for the event so far, and this number will continue to grow as the festival approaches.”
New Annual has also been given tacit approval from the state government with two grants from the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.
While there is no word on which of the many Novocastrian creatives will feature as part of the festival, all will be revealed when the official program is launched in October.
New Annual will run from 12-21 February 2021.
