SECRET MENU: Your guide to cocktail month in Newcastle

Newcastle will join 11 other cities around Australia to celebrate a month of delicious cocktails in May.

Australian Cocktail Month will see some of the best local and international alcohol brands joining forces with Newcastle’s favourite cocktail bars to shine a light on the amazing sector of the hospitality industry.

A $20 Cocktail Month ticket, which can be purchased online, gives you access to special menus of $14 cocktails created exclusively for the month-long event.

Six local bars will be taking part in Newcastle including Coal & Cedar, Babylon, The Koutetsu and Bar Mellow.

Founder, and influential industry figure, Penny Sippe said that Australian Cocktail Month aims to provide assistance to the hospitality industry by driving people into bars as they rebuild following the pandemic.

“I am so excited for another year of Australian Cocktail Month,” said Penny.

“Year two and we have more cities and double the bars involved. Encouraging consumers to head out and explore the bars that make our cities so vibrant whilst enjoying amazing cocktails created by some of the country’s best bartenders is our goal.”

Australian Cocktail Month kicks off on 1 May and runs for the whole month. The $20 tickets, which unlock the special cocktail menus at each other bars can be purchased online at Check out what’s on offer at each of the bars below.

New South Paloma
Taking the famous tequila-based classic and adding this fresh and fruity expression of rum really gives it a new twist. We may have found our new favourite version of this fresh and fruity classic cocktail – featuring Archie Rose White Cane Spirit.

Mai Lyre
We wanted to take the classic Mai Tai and turn it into a non-alcoholic option. Without a substitute for the rum, this just become a sweet and sour mix with a pretty garnish. Introducing, Lyre’s Dark Cane. Now you can enjoy the flavours and flurry of a delicious Mai Tai, minus the booze. (Triple Sec is added for more flavour and does contain 15ml of alcohol. This is still classed as a low ABV drink).
