CIVIC DIGEST: An Australian-first for Newcastle

The Civic Digest cafe, which opened last week, brings together cutting edge technology, and quality food and beverage services to create a 21st century cultural experience at Civic Theatre Newcastle. And we’re loving it.

In an Australian first, Civic Digest represents an evolution in library service delivery with digital screens, apps with library-provided content and high quality WiFi.

A partnership between Newcastle Regional Library and the Civic Theatre, the cafe hopes to breathe new life into the civic precinct as a creative hub and ambient space for people to engage with information and culture.

CIVIC DIGEST: A combination of old and new

International advocate for digital libraries, Liz McGettigan, was in Newcastle to open Civic Digest and says the concept is exciting and ground-breaking for Australian libraries.

“If libraries are to thrive, they must play an active role in shaping their future and remaining relevant. They need to become experimental and experiential spaces that respond to the contemporary ways our modern society consumes information and engages with each other. Civic Digest is a brilliant example of a 21st century library experience.”

CIVIC DIGEST: Creative and ambient

Opening at 7.30am, the cafe is a perfect spot for morning coffee drinkers who want to login and start planning their day. The cafe will also will also trade late into the evening in line with theatre operations to provide a space for after-performance refreshments.

The menu will be a simple all-day grazing menu with high-quality coffee and Hunter wines throughout the evening.

  1. I think if you do bacon and eggs I’ll go there. I visited the café recently to see what it looks like. Chatted to a couple of guys working there. It looks like a great place to be but the food offered didn’t appeal to me.
