After a mammoth multi-million dollar reconstruction the new-look Exchange Hotel has opened its doors!
The Beaumont Street pub has undergone quite the transformation over the last few months and those who remember the Exchange of old could be mistaken for thinking they’ve stepped into an entirely new venue.
The centrepiece of the reconstruction is the impressive “band room” dubbed Live At The X
The space has the goods to cater for local, national and international acts, once COVID restrictions become a thing of the past. But, for now, the gig calendar has been stacked with a great line-up of local talent.
The one and only Timberlina will also be bringing a touch of pizazz to proceedings with a weekly all-inclusive extravaganza dubbed Sunday Service. Cocktails from 3, a dizzying array of drag performances by Timberlina and friends, DJs from 6 – this promises to be one heck of a way to see off the week!
Oh, and sports fans are well catered for, too with the largest privately owned TV screen in the SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.
We mentioned cocktails and, the creations coming out of the upstairs Swill Bar are truly next level.
Overseen by master mixologist and Zenith Hotels’ group beverage manager Brent Tozer, this cocktail menu offers up some truly daring tipples that are sure to have you coming back for more.
Having already sampled the bold, smoky flavours of the signature Smoked Strawberry Margarita (Hickory smoked strawberries, Herradura, Cointreau, and lime) and the gorgeous Gunslinger (Gunpowder tea-infused Bombay Sapphire, apricot brandy, peche, lime, and pineapple) we certainly can’t wait to block out a few lazy hours to run through the entire menu.
“We’re hoping that we’ve covered everyone’s palate,” Brent told Newcastle Live. “We’ve got sour-based drinks, sweet-based drinks. Our signature cocktail, the Smoked Strawberry Margarita for example is pretty amazing.
“It’s hickory wood that’s lit on fire and smoked – the strawberries are cooked through with the smoke and that’s rested, blended and strained off to become the smoked strawberry juice and the rest, like the pulp and so on is dehydrated and we flake that off and add sea salt and put it through a spice grinder to become the salt on the rim.”
The passion that is evident in every sip of these cocktails is not exclusive to the Swill Bar, either.
The centrepiece of the new-look Kitchen is the wood-fire oven helmed by pizza maestro Franco Malgioglio.
Top-quality ingredients are the order of the day here with Franco and team pouring heart and soul into every pizza. Not least of which the to-die-for signature Bufala (Napoli sauce, fior di latte, prosciutto, Buffalo mozzarella and basil).
“I’ve been working for over 25 years to perfect the dough. The dough is levitated for 24 to 48 hours and the result is a base that’s nice and fluffy but also crunchy as well,” Franco said.
“It’s not just a pizza that has things slopped on it. These pizzas are made with pride, dedication and passion.”
Aside from the formidable pizza lineup, The Kitchen also offers an array of tempting mains including Slow Roasted Chicken, a 300g pork cutlet and Roasted Barramundi. Not to mention the classic pub fare such as steak, schnittys, parmiagana, and burgers.
There is truly something for everyone at the new-look Exchange.
