Since the launch of Reading Makes You Better In Bed on Newcastle Live Radio everyone around the office has been on the hunt for their next can’t-put-down read.
And while the feel of a fresh book with an un-cracked spine is nice, you really can’t beat the smells and rare finds you get rummaging around a second-hand bookshop. And the people who run them really know their books and are more than happy to point you in the right direction and chat about their most treasured reads
Here’s a list of some of our favourites.
We were sad to see it go from its Hunter Street home, but Rices Bookshop has risen again in an awesome space in Beaumont street after a stint at Tighes Hill. And now, thanks to the wonders of technology, you can even take a virtual tour of the shop.

Great selection of popular paperback and, for you true crime buffs, there’s a massive collection of crime books to sift through.
And keep your eyes pealed for some truely special vintage finds.

Cooks Hill Books
For us, a visit to Cooks Hill Books is all about the art books.
They’ve got heaps of them and they’re always adding new stuff. A trip to the Darby street store always turns up some great finds but, be warned, you’ll end up buying a lot more than you anticipated.
ADDRESS: 72 Darby St, Cooks Hill NSW 2300
The Press Coffee and Book House
Because coffee and books forever!
It’s a great space to meet up with fellow introverted book lovers to spend an hour nose deep in your new favourite read while sipping on some well-made coffee.
ADDRESS: 462 Hunter St, Newcastle NSW 2300
Lifeline always comes up when you’re talking second-hand books because you always find great stuff if you’ve got the time to browse.
And while there are plenty of Lifeline stores to check out around the Hunter, Clyde Street is our pick of the bunch.
