Bofolk Ballico Writes The Ballad Of Joey Johns

A local singer/songwriter has penned an anthem dedicated to footy legend Andrew “Joey” Johns that has been blowing up on social media this weekend.

Bofolk Ballico is a folk-influenced singer/songwriter who hosts as regular open mic at The Hamilton Station Hotel, as well as performing regularly around town. He released his latest EP, Top Five Songs, earlier in the year.

His new song, ‘ImmorTOOL’ is all about “The 8th Immortal” Andrew Johns; the Novocastrian icon famous for his work both on and off the field. The song is a light-hearted take on the Newcastle Knights player, and the inspiration came from a Facebook post.

Bofolk Ballico has started a series on Facebook entitiled Tell Me What To Write A Song About: Letting his fans suggest what should be the subject of his next song.

“I thought it would be a bit of fun, to ask friends to name a topic and to challenge myself to make something of it in a small period of time” he explains. “It’s also a good way to engage people on my facebook page”.

After trawling through all the suggestions left to him, he settled on his friend Sam’s suggestion of ‘The Ballad Of Joey Johns’, with the whole project being completed in a matter of hours; “The lyrics were done in under 10 minutes, the music maybe half an hour”.

Bofolk Ballico uploaded the video on Friday afternoon, saying that he thought it would be “funny to maybe 5 of my friends”, but over the past 5 days has amassed over 10,000 views on Facebook.

“It’s ridiculous” Ballico explains, “It’s insane. I made it under the assumption that I’d get near 100 views in total. But a whole lot of footy fans have found it and shared it.”
