The first guest writers for The Newcastle Writers Festival 2026 have been announced, revealing an eclectic mix of international bestsellers, beloved Australian icons, philosophers, poets and political figures set to appear across three big days from March 27 to 29.
Leading the lineup is global bestselling author Charlotte McConaghy, whose latest novel was selected for Reese Witherspoon’s November Book Club.
She’ll be joined by Australian culinary legend Stephanie Alexander, British philosopher A. C. Grayling, and more than 150 writers from Australia and abroad who will take part in discussions, performances and community events.
Former NSW premier Bob Carr returns to the festival to talk about his forthcoming memoir Bring Back Yesterday, a deeply personal account written after the loss of his wife Helena.
Also appearing is award-winning poet Evelyn Araluen, whose powerful new collection The Rot delves into themes of colonial legacy, ecological grief and resilience.
Author, artist and hip-hop performer Omar Musa will bring his genre-spanning novel Fierceland to Newcastle, exploring hidden family histories and shifting power structures.
The festival will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of Stephanie Alexander’s classic The Cook’s Companion, with the much-loved food writer making her Newcastle Writers Festival debut at 85.
A. C. Grayling returns following his popular appearance earlier this year, presenting a lecture based on his new book For the People: Fighting Authoritarianism, Saving Democracy.
He’ll also join local philosopher Russell Blackford for the Philosopher’s Café, an audience-driven discussion that proved a hit at the 2025 festival.
Events will be held throughout the Civic precinct, including NuSpace, the Conservatorium of Music, Watt Space Gallery and City Hall, with additional sessions in Cessnock and Port Stephens.
