Australia’s funniest comedians are bringing new shows to Newcastle

Newcastle comedy fans are going to be spoilt for choice over the coming months, with seven of Australia’s most loved acts bringing their latest shows to stages across the city.

Dave Hughes will lead the change this weekend, 13 June, when he hits the Civic Theatre with a new show promising the brutally honest observations that have made him one of Australia’s most enduring comedy stars.

Hughes is joined on the city’s growing comedy calendar by fellow television favourite Tom Gleeson, who will take to the Civic Theatre stage on 6 July following his success as host of Hard Quiz and Taskmaster Australia.

The Playhouse will welcome a trio of acclaimed comedians over July and August, beginning with Lizzy Hoo’s latest stand-up hour, Says Hoo? on 25 July. Brett Blake follows on 30 July with a newly added performance after strong demand for tickets, while Dave Thornton brings his relatable and observational comedy style to the venue on 2 August.

Also appearing on 25 July is Geraldine Hickey, who will perform A Weight Off My Chest at Newcastle City Hall.

Fresh from a successful 2026 festival season, Hickey’s latest show explores everything from relationships and identity to birdwatching and the quirks of modern life. A familiar face from television programs, including I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Spicks & Specks and Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hickey remains one of Australia’s most respected comedy performers.

Rounding out the line-up are comedy legends Lano & Woodley, who bring their latest production Lano & Woodley in Space to Civic Theatre Newcastle on 29 August. Combining physical comedy, absurd storytelling and the duo’s trademark chemistry, the show promises a cosmic adventure filled with laughs for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
