We love a bit of public art here at Newcastle Live because anything that makes the world a brighter place is worthwhile, right?
So that’s why we’re chuffed to see Lake Macquarie Council putting the call out to artists from across the Hunter to breathe some creative life into traffic signal boxes across the LGA.
Successful artists will receive $600 to complete a piece on one signal box or $1000 for groups of two signal boxes.
Council’s major creative projects innovation coordinator Jo Smith said the project was a great way to showcase the awesome breadth of artistic talent we have in our region while also helping our local creatives financially.
“The past few months have been tough for our community and in particular our local artists and creatives, who have struggled to find work or experienced a loss of income,” she said.
“This EOI is a great opportunity for local artists to showcase their work, get creative and help beautify intersections across the City, while being paid to do so.”
Artists are invited to submit designs that reflect the culture of the area for the signal boxes located at Charlestown, Edgeworth, Morisset, Swansea and Windale.
A judging panel will select the final designs and applications close at 5pm on Thursday 6 August.
