While it’s pretty much a given that 2020 has been a bit of a bummer, one of the silver linings of the year has definitely been the number of top-quality tunes coming out of this fair city we call Newcastle and the wider Hunter Region!
As the world ground to a halt, and with their industry utterly decimated in the wake of COVID-19, Newcastle’s fecund crop of eclectic talent put their heads down and got on with the business of giving us some of the best music to be found anywhere. In the world.
From the smooth-as-silk vibes of Komiti’s Feels and the cosmic country meanderings of Magpie Diaries‘ Go Anywhere to the ethereal, heart on sleeve emotion of Grace Turner’s Half Light, to the punk rock upstartedness of I Hate People’s New World Order and sheer rock swagger of Hot Flush’s Rock Attack, if you can’t find something here to make your ears rejoice, chances are you have no soul!
Or what about the sheer magic of William Crighton’s This Is Magic? Or the lo-fi pop brilliance of Fritz’s Arrow? Honestly, how much more convincing do you need that Newy and the Hunter Region is one of the hottest spots for musical talent in this wide brown land we call OZ?
And this is by no means an exhaustive list, either. QWe would love to see what Newy tunes floated your boat in 2020.
So, from everyone here at NL, a massive thank you to all local artists who have helped keep us sane in 2020 with new music, live streams and gigs (where they could be found).
We love you all.
Happy listening, and here’s to a massively musical 2021!
