A POULTRY AFFAIR: Chicken Cartel throws open doors at The Cambridge

There’s something delightfully fowl going on at the Cambridge.

That’s right, Newcastle’s spiritual home of live music now also plays host to Chicken Cartel a mouthwatering eat-in or takeaway affair where chicken is well and truly king.

The ‘little sister’ to the ever-popular Newy Burger Co threw open its doors for the first time on Wednesday night so we just had to get along and see what all the fuss was about.

Situated in the Cambridge’s front bar, the rock and roll DNA of the venue is writ large in the Chicken Cartel space with signed drum skins and guitars lining the wall.

However, on this occasion, we opted for the takeaway option and in a nutshell, we were not disappointed.

Given Newy Burger Co’s position in the increasingly competitive local burg market, there were fears that these guys may have set the bar too high for their chicken-based ‘side hustle.’

However, those fears were quickly allayed after a quick perusal of the menu – a focused bill of fare that offers up four burgers, fried chicken baskets, wings, chicken and waffles, and dessert.

Oh and most of the menu can be requested gluten-free so, yay!

The menu also features a range of sides including chicken ribs and skins, fried halloumi fries and Paris mash and chicken gravy.

On this maiden voyage however, we decided to sample two of the burgers – the first being the venue’s standard Cartel Burg.

Stacked with perfectly cooked buttermilk southern fried chicken, lettuce, buffalo, ranch, and pickles, this burger may sound simple, but it packs one hell of a flavour punch, thanks in no small part to the combination of the buffalo and ranch sauces and beautifully seasoned chicken.

Next cab off the rank was the Pickle Me Chicken burger and this one certainly lived up to its name.

Again with the same gorgeously seasoned fried chicken as the hero, this burger also packed a piquant punch with a super zesty pickled slaw and a hefty helping of pickles. Add to that some American cheese and kewpie mayo and you’ve got yourself one morish burger, sir!

This place is definitely a welcome and worthy addition to the Newy food scene.

If you like some fried chicken with your live music, then Chicken Cartel could very well be THE place to fill up before checking out some great tunes in the Cambo’s now-iconic band room.

Chicken Cartel is located at the Cambridge Hotel (789 Hunter Street). Head here to keep abreast (get it?!) of all the info.
