The cavernous band room at the Newcastle Leagues Club is about to start pumping again.
After laying dormant since the Vault manager relocated to Adelaide in July last year, the room has been given a new lease on life courtesy of Newcastle-bred sound guy Chris Barnett.
As a former manager of the Enmore, Metro and Factory theatres, Chris couldn’t come more credentialed to revitalise the room which he has dubbed The Badger’s Lair.
“I also built sound systems at the Metro and Home nightclub and toured as a sound guy with the likes of Ian Moss, Thirsty Merc and The Potbelleez,” Chris told Newcastle Live.
Chris, who added that it had always been a dream to run a room in his hometown, started his company Barnyard Promotions which ran the recent Frostbites reunion at the Crown and Anchor Hotel.
Chris said that after the success of that night he found himself at a loss as to where to next, and the seeds of The Badger’s Lair were sewn.
“After that I was like: ‘well, now what? I haven’t got any events ready to go,’ so I started looking around and I found a place called The Vault which I’d never heard of so I came in to have a look at the room,’ he said.
“I saw this incredible PA which was the same one I used touring with Ian Moss for three years and I knew then this was the place – also the management of the club have been great in getting this up and running, too which is awesome.”
Chris added that The Badger’s Lair would kick off on Saturday 8 June with a free hip-hop and vinyl showcase hosted by the popular Madhouse DJs which he said would feature around 20 artists.
The venue will also host a regular local and East Coast band night dubbed Noisy Neighbours – the first iteration of which will feature a six-band bill on June 21.
“Ultimately the goal is to put noisy neighbours in venues along the East Coast so bands can base a whole east coast run, playing in good venues each night.”
