Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp delivered a Notice of Motion today calling on the State Government to abandon the plan to ship 12,000 cubic metres of Sydney’s toxic sludge.
He says that the material, to be dug up during construction of the Northern Beaches Link, contains lead, mercury, silver, zinc, poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and dioxins.
After preliminary treatment in Sydney, Transport for NSW proposes to barge the waste to Newcastle with Mayfield North under consideration as a temporary storage site. Approximately 45 truckloads of material would be transported to a waste facility.
