A colourful lineup of visiting poets to wax lyrical in Newcastle

Following this coming weekend’s frenzy of literary activity at the Newcastle Writers’ Festival, word lovers will be treated to Cuplet – a night of poetry on featuring a quite a colourful lineup of authors.

Visitors will be treated to work from New Zealand’s Eliana Gray, Lachlan Brown from Wagga Wagga, Brisbane wordsmith Rae White from Brisbane and Sydney’s Pam Brown.

Observant readers might notice a pattern in the names of the poets on this line-up – they’re all colour based.

“It was kind of an accident,” organiser Claire Albrecht added. “Once we had two Browns, I just had to keep it going. It was a great excuse to get Rae White down from Brisbane, whose book Milk Teeth has been a crazy success.”

“I’ve been asking Lachlan Brown to make the trip for ages, and since he’s on the program for the Newcastle Writers’ Festival, it made sense to grab him while he’s here. And with Eliana Gray visiting from New Zealand to launch their new book Eager to Break, it’s a neutral palette dream!”

“Pam Brown is one of Australia’s best poets and I’m so glad she’s been able to make the trip. She’s been in the game for four decades and is such a great reader – it will be a treat for everyone.”

Cuplet is a monthly poetry night and Claire said that the program varied widely from month to month.

“It’s always really varied and exciting, and I love watching the responses of people in the audience who got something they weren’t expecting,”

Cuplet has been growing since it first launched in August 2018. With poets from the USA, the Netherlands, interstate and locally sharing their work with Newcastle audiences each month, it has helped cemented the city as a creative hub for poetry.

Further, Claire was quick to point out that Cuplet wasn’t a stuffy event filled with literary academics with leather patches on their tweed jackets.

“I’ve loved seeing the younger demographic turning up to these events. By far our biggest online demographic is women aged 25-34, which is a change from the traditionally older, stuffy crowd some people might expect. Though we love our stuffy oldies too! There’s really something for everyone.”

Cuplet will be on at The Beaumont, Hamilton from 7pm on Wednesday 10 April.
