5 reasons The Gum Ball 2017 was the best one yet

Heading into The Gum Ball last Friday night, we knew we were in for 3 days of festival fun. The line up was solid, the weather was good and after 11 years of doing it, we know the guys at Dashville know how to throw a great party. Well, our expectations were met and the bar has been set rather high for next year… Because we, like many others, are calling it the best Gum Ball ever!

With so much happening, we could fill a book with highlights, instead we’ve broken our review down to 5 things we think made the 2017 Gum Ball the best yet… Oh, and we’ve singled out a few acts we were frothing on.

There’s something magical about this piece of dirt. We know the upper Belford location has been lovingly curated over the last 11 years making sure everything has a purpose and place, but it’s more than that. You can almost feel the good times that have been had here and the remnants of past festivals that are fixed to walls or laying around the site really drive it home.

The People

It’s often said that the people make the festival, and it’s no more truer than at The Gum Ball.

Many of the festival goers are on a first name basis with the promoters. And maybe that’s the secret here at Dashville – They really know their audience… Personally.

PS – Was good to see our mate, Nick Milligan take to the stage for a few jokes at one point too!

The Family Vibe

There are lots of festivals that say they’re kid friendly but, when you get there, they’re anything but.

This is one of the areas where Gum Ball really shines. They actually give a rats about making sure the kids have a great time. It’s not only the activities they have on offer for the younger festival goer, it’s the way the space is set up – You don’t feel the need to helicopter your kids, but they’re never far away.

The Food

Ok, festival food is something we know a hell of a lot about here at Newcastle Live, and we’ve got to say that Gum Ball 2017 made all the right culinary moves.

There’s nothing like some hot Meet as the sun goes down, and everyone loves a mid morning Poh Boy.

The Stage

There’ve been some great Gum Ball lineups but this is probably the one we’ve been most excited about. We could go on for paragraphs about the stand out moments from the stages at Gum Ball, but instead we’re going to call out 3 of the acts we thought delivered beyond expectation.

Irish Mythen

After catching the magic of Irish Mythen at Bluesfest earlier this month, we made the call that her Friday night slot at Gum Ball was the one not to miss! We weren’t wrong. No matter how many times we hear Tullamore Blues, it kicks us right in the feels.

Kim Churchill

Kim Chirchill has really made his mark on the festival circuit and has become a local favourite to boot. His effortless and charismatic delivery made his early evening set an absolute joy to watch and the highlight of the Saturday program for us.

Africa Entsha

We’re always up for some booty shaking rhythms, even if it is before lunch.  Soweto’s Africa Entsha was just what the doctor ordered – Passionate, soulful, danceable jams with a message.
