Local artist, Bofolk Ballico loves movies. This year alone he’s sat down and watched 228 of them (and counting), so it was inevitable that sooner or later he would start writing songs about them too.
This is not to say that Top Five Songs, the third EP from Bofolk, is just about movies. The 22 year-old singer/songwriter spins tales of love, life, growing up, and dreams with a unique voice that is inspired by Bob Dylan and Frank Turner as much as it is by Citizen Kane and Dazed & Confused.
The Novocastrian has always looked for different ways to present his songs. His debut EP Get Folked! was recorded live in one take, and earlier in the year he released Bofolk & Friends, which he recorded himself on an 8-track recorder. This new release is a concept EP about the world of cinema; the scenes and stories that have stuck with him the most.
The EP was recorded by Brien McVernon (The Retro Rockets) at Impromptu Music in his hometown of Newcastle, mixed by Dhare Labbe at FDM Studios, and mastered by Mark Tinson (Rabbit/The Steelville Cats).
On the release Bofolk Ballico is joined by a handful of friends and guests, each adding a complimentary layer to his sound, creating an EP that shows Bofolk’s full range; from tender ballads to communal sing-a-longs.
To celebrate this release, Bofolk has announced a special launch show at The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel on the 12th of February. The free show will feature Sydney’s Isaac Graham, as well as local acts Spencer Scott and The Duke Of Erlington. Bofolk will be joined by some special guests, and copies of Top Five Songs will be available on the night.
