With the lead up to the biggest commercial holiday of the year (yay Christmas) I thought I’d write a series on local places to get the best gifts for your loved ones. Everyone loves gifts, and gift karma is a real thing.
You give bad gifts, you receive bad gifts (not that it’s about the materialism of the whole season it’s about the process right?) Wrong, this is 2017 and we’re all about that life. With that in mind, here’s the first instalment. Books should be everyone’s go to gift. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Books can take you literally anywhere in the world (and transport you to many other worlds as well). But, where to shop and why? Here are the best book stores in town. (I have omitted Dymocks and Harry Harthog from this list but those are great too, obviously).
Cooks Hill Books
The second hand book store in town, be prepared to lose an hour or so wondering the shelves (just me?). A mix of contemporary titles and classics (they have records too!) Cooks Hill Books are sure to have something to bring a smile to the face of the reader in your life. And ask anyone, who doesn’t love the smell of a second hand book right?
The Book Grocer
Disclaimer, I work here. (What I love books and I’m a workaholic). But… this is the perfect place for all your Christmas needs purely because everything in store is $10. Yep, that’s right, 10 dollerydoos, or if you’re feeling extra special and in a giving mood, you can grab 6 for 50. NICE.
If you’re after the best of the new releases (trust me there are so many to pick from) or just need a really great next read recommendation, look no further than MacLeans on Beaumont Street. A delightful book store with dedicated book loving staff to help you on your way. Reasonably priced and an independent store. Win, win, win.
I’ve always loved Abicus on Darby Street and I love the way they are always expanding their collection of great things. Just in time for Christmas, you can now grab many a great book to go with that pair of socks you bought for your Dad. They’ve got some really great titles, especially for the musically minded gal pal in your life, so you’re on a winner.
Press Book House
Second hand books are the BEST. And Press have a delightfully tidy selection. Last time I checked they also had the full set of Harry Potter books, at an unbelievably great price. Also, the guys who work here are wonderful and will happily help you out with some suggestions.
