Last week’s gig with The Ruben’s at The Bar on the Hill reaffirms our theory that the Universty of Newcastle bar is one of Newcastle’s best rooms to see live music in.
The Rubens hit the stage a little later than expected but it wasn’t long before frontman Sam Margin launched into the first few rows for a crowd surfing effort that could only be described as epic.
There’s something about a lead singer who rocks a bit of microphone showmanship. One minute he’s is wearing the lead as a necklace and the next he’s using it as a tool of swagger, resting his body weight via one arm draped across the stand.
‘Never Ever’, the band’s newest single, makes an appearance midway through the set to much applause. The single features vocals from Sarah but tonight the Rubens call on support artists Milan Ring to fill the spot. She’s right in the pocket with Sam during the duet with the singer exclaiming “fuck me! You nailed that!” at the end of the song. We have to agree.
While the new songs are hitting the mark, it’s the band’s most loved singles from their last release that get the biggest reaction from the crowd. And why not, they’re bloody great tunes.
If it's on in Newcastle, it's on Newcastle Live
