Newcastle Now will partner with Hunter Development Corporation and the council in an effort to deliver a diverse program of events that will appeal to the whole family this summer.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said “It’s ON!” will build on the enormous boost that hosting the Asian Cup will bring to the Newcastle visitor economy.

“Beginning with New Year’s Eve festivities and continuing through Asian Cup fixtures in January and the 30th anniversary of the iconic Surfest in February, Newcastle City Centre will come alive. The Asian Cup will deliver a global audience to Newcastle and this initiative will help the city put its best foot forward.” she said.

This year’s program will include:

New Year’s Eve Festivities
New Year’s Eve family activity will commence at 4pm and conclude after the fireworks display at 9pm. The focus will be on harbour activity, aerial demos and a light/fireworks show focused in the Honeysuckle precinct. Families will enjoy live music, DJ’s, roving entertainers, a circus workshop and face painting. Transport plans include free buses to and from Broadmeadow Station.

AFC Asian Cup
Honeysuckle will be the place for spectator involvement and celebrations during the AFC Asian Cup. A Fanzone will operate between the Maritime Centre and The Dockyard with a large viewing screen located at the end of The Dockyard for live screening of the Asian Cup fixtures. (No live screenings on Newcastle game nights). An AFC Asian Cup dome with interactive kiosks will be activated in Harbour Square. Theming for the fanzone will be continually changing and evolving as the tournament progresses.

Australia Day
Honeysuckle will be activated from 10am to 4pm on Australia Day, including a Big BBQ with food stalls featuring grills and BBQs from many cultures. Water activity and continuous entertainment will take place all day along the foreshore with live Newcastle-based multicultural musicians, dance groups and visual artists. The day will also feature a Livesite broadcast of Asian Cup Semi Final 1 from Sydney from 6pm.

Surfest 30th Anniversary
During Surfest, a mixture of music, movies and daily competition updates at Honeysuckle will keep the Surfest atmosphere going after the day’s events are over. Stage appearances, interviews and highlights of the day will form part of the entertainment program and a selection of laid-back musical performance will pepper the evening followed by the movie screenings.
