Stewart Avenue will be closed to traffic between Hunter Street and Honeysuckle Drive for three weekends in June.
The closure will allow construction and installation of the light rail track across the road.

When will work take place?
9.30am Friday 1 June – 5am Monday 4 June
7pm Thursday 7 June – 5am Tuesday 12 June
7pm Friday 15 June – 5am Monday 18 June
Changed traffic conditions during road closures will cause delays and we encourage people to take this into account when planning their trip.
Use of public transport is encouraged, as are initiatives such as Newcastle City Council’s Park and Ride service. For more information, visit newcastletransport.info or newcastle.nsw.gov.au/parkandride.
Detours will be in place to divert traffic via Hunter Street and Albert Street at Wickham. Access from Hannell Street to Honeysuckle Drive will be maintained. Local access to Beresford Street via Bellevue Street will be maintained under traffic control.
All lanes will be open in each direction on Stewart Avenue outside of the closure periods. Watt Street will also be closed to traffic at the intersection of Scott Street from Monday 21 May to Wednesday 6 June.
The footpath on the western side of Stewart Avenue between Hunter Street and Newcastle Interchange will be closed during the first two Stewart Avenue closures, from 9.30am Friday 1 June to 5am Monday 4 June and from 7pm Thursday 7 June to 5am Tuesday 12 June 2018. During these closures, a temporary diversion to Newcastle Interchange will be in place via the eastern side of Stewart Avenue, and from Station Street on the northern side.
The footpath on the eastern side of Stewart Avenue between Hunter Street and Newcastle Interchange will be closed during the final weekend closure from 7pm Friday 15 June to 5am Monday 18 June 2018. The footpath on the western side of Stewart Avenue will remain open during this time.
The on-road cycle lanes on Stewart Avenue between Hunter Street and Honeysuckle Drive will be closed from Friday 1 June to Monday 18 June. Cyclists may walk their bikes via the temporary pedestrian diversions in place during road closures.
From Friday 1 June to Monday 18 June, the bus stop in front of Newcastle Interchange will be temporarily relocated. For more information about changes to bus services, please visit newcastletransport.info.
