Marie Duplessis’ had many lovers to help achieve her dream. She was so poor, starving and ragged that she desired nothing more that getting money to spend on nice things and pomme frites. Songs for the Fallen, which comes to the Civic Theatre Newcastle on Thursday the 15th October, is a thrilling musical-party charting Marie’s life from poverty to infamy in burgeoning 19th century Paris. This is the wild and hilarious tale of a woman who knew one thing: good girls don’t make history.
Following hugely successful seasons in Sydney and Brisbane that had critics and audiences raving, and with a lush, live pop score by award-winning composer Basil Hogios, this is the final party of the woman who defied her fate and captured a nation.
Before “Songs For The Fallen” even starts there is pre-set music of “Material Girl” from Madonna which is very apropos considering the main character, Marie Duplessis’ proclivity for possessions.
