Roller Derby is back! The Movember and Christmas themed double header bout at the Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre on Saturday November 29th will be the final event for the year.
The first game will see the Maitland Roller Girls come up against Coastal Knockouts team The Saffires, after which two teams made up of Newcastle Roller Derby League skaters and their “pot-luck” guests will take to the track as „The Mustdashers‟ and “The Beardiful Ladies‟.
The bout will mark the end of a tumultuous year for the league, which was left without a home venue after the repurposing of their previous location at Gateshead. Despite the setback the league has maintained a rigorous training schedule and competed in both local and interstate tournaments. A regular training space has now been found at Kahibah Public School, but the league continues to seek sponsors who can help them to secure a venue of their own.
Skater for Newcastle Roller Derby League Zoe Hennessey, who is known on the track as Moxie Dioxide, said she is looking forward to a fun game to finish the season. “We’ve worked really hard this year in competition, so it will be nice to reward ourselves with a bit of silliness. It also gives us a chance to demonstrate all the great skills we‟ve been working on, which I‟m sure the fans will love.”
Tickets for the game can be purchased from newcastlerollerderby.org.au or at the door on the day. Doors will open at 5pm for a 5:30 start. For more information visit the Facebook Event Page.
