REVIEW: The Alibi Room Barber Shop & Shaving Parlour

The Alibi Room Barber & Shaving Parlour, located on Hunter Street next to Newcastle’s first ‘speakeasy’, Coal & Cedar, opened in late July 2015, and has been receiving rave reviews from all who’ve ventured through their wrought iron gates for a trim and tidy. We sent our contributor, Dan, in for some much-needed man-scaping, and he got much more than he bargained for…

It’s been a long time since I’ve been into a proper barbershop, or even a hair salon. For the last 2 or 3 years I’ve been doing my own buzz-cuts at home – and, oh yes, you can tell (you’ll see what I mean in the before and after shots below).

On arrival at The Alibi Room, I’m offered a drink from the parlour’s well-stocked fridge. The guys have really made this space something to behold; filled with beautifully curated memorabilia, artwork, and antique trinkets – not to mention a full sized pool table – you’d be forgiven for wanting to spend a few minutes exploring the room before your cut.

My barber and the proprietor of The Alibi Room, Ian, has a quick chat with me about what style of cut I’m after, and the health of my hair and bushy beard. Not being one who is schooled in current trends or fashions, I give Ian carte blanche to tame my wild mane.

“This is not my first rodeo,” Ian quips; he’s tackled much bigger and bushier mops than mine in his time, and as I settle into one of the barber chairs, I know I’m in very good hands.

As Ian snips and shaves, we chat about the history of the industry, how he met the other barbers that work the floor here, and where he picked up all the interesting memorabilia. Each piece in the room has a genuine history, in particular, the four authentic vintage barber chairs. The old-school charm of The Alibi Room is something Ian always had in mind, so he collected the pieces over many years, ranging from lucky local finds to well-travelled gems.

“There’s no such thing as a quick cut,” Ian tells me, offering some insight into The Alibi Room’s philosophy. As I watch both Ian and Scott, the other barber present, meticulously crafting and cutting away at their clients, it’s pretty clear that what these guys do is an indisputable art form.

After about an hour, it’s time to marvel at the finished product. The big question is… Do I feel like a new man?

To be honest, the answer is a surprising, yet resounding, yes. I knew I was in for a great haircut, but what I wasn’t expecting was to feel so good about myself walking out of the parlour. And, as you can see from the before and after shots below, the results truly speak for themselves.
