REVIEW: Robert Spurling’s Catalyst

Newcastle Live -

Music

Western Australian expat, Robert Spurling who now calls Newcastle home, released his album Catalyst recently and we thought we’d give it a spin to see if you’d like it.

Robert came to the attention of Newcastle Live last year when he posted online that he was  “looking for a melodic rock or pop singer to write and record originals with”. Since then he’s launched his recording Catalyst to the world. So what do we think?

Blistering guitar solos, delayed pianos and thrashing drums. That’s what we think.

If you’ve ever heard Robert Miles’ track Children and loved it, we’re pretty sure you’ll get something from this too. It’s heavily layered and think with melody. In particular we like the acoustic tones of tracks like Searching and the arpeggio in Let Go.

Robert lists Joe Satriani, Jesper Stromblad, Mark Tremonti, The Butterfly Effect, Amorphis, Heat and Alter Bridge as his biggest influences and it shows on this recording. The playing is precise and there’s no empty space here.

You can have a listen to the full album on Robert’s Youtube channel, or head straight to iTunes for the full quality download.
