We’re always up for a feel good post here on Newcastle Live, so we were inspired to pass on some information that hit our inbox this morning. From Monday 13 November until Monday 11 December 2017, Newcastle Region Library members have a chance to clear unpaid library fines by supporting people in need across Newcastle this Christmas.
Library members with outstanding overdue fees can donate non-perishable food items and toiletries to have $5 deducted for each food item, and $10 for every toiletry, from their overdue fine ledger.
All items collected under the Food For Five, Toiletries for 10 initiative will be donated to local emergency relief agencies OzHarvest, Street Care, Baptist Care and the Samaritans.
They will package up the goods for needy families in the lead up to Christmas.
“Food for Five, Toiletries For Ten is an initiative used by public libraries in Australia and across the world to support local charities and settle outstanding fees with members,” Newcastle City Council Libraries Manager Suzie Gately said.
“It’s a fantastic way to remind members to return items at the end of the year.
“Newcastle Region Library has used this initiative in previous years and we look forward to giving back to the Newcastle community.
“There’s no limit to the amount in overdue charges you can pay off with food, but food and toiletries donations will only be used to clear overdue charges.
“Payment for lost and damaged items or other charges must be paid for with cash or EFTpos.”
Food For FiveToiletries For Ten begins on Monday 13 November and runs until Monday 11 December 2017.
