The Osman is back with his weekly Newcastle Live post…
How good were Mi-Sex and The Angels at The Doylo last Saturday Night. Absolutely magnificent. Both these bands bring back so many memories from the 70s and 80s and really know how to put on a show. Apart from the great music from days gone by, several similarities between the bands exist. They both have released music with their current lineups and they both have in the past lost their lead singers. Both current frontmen, Steve Balbi (Mi-Sex) and Dave Gleeson (The Angels) are not trying to replace Steve Gilpin or Doc Neeson, they are both bringing their style to each band to continue the legacy of the music of the bands that has been left by past frontmen. Sarah Gilpin, daughter of the late Steve Gilpin was in the crowd, front row, lapping up the performance as she often does, trekking down from Queensland to follow her dad’s band around. We all get another opportunity to rock out to both bands as they will be appearing at Belmont 16s on Saturday 6th August as part of the Hardwired Tour. It may already be booked out, so check with the Club for availability.
That brings us to this week’s program, Ossie And Friends (Lake Macquarie FM 97.3) as we will be having a chat on the phone with Murray (Muzza) Burns, keyboard player from Mi-Sex, courtesy of Golden Robot Records, Social Family Records and Music Solutions Warners Bay. Muzza will be chatting with us about the newly released single from Mi-Sex, MySex YourSex and an upcoming album from the band, due for release in September. The new song was greeted with roaring support at the gig on Saturday Night. Muzza and I will have a chat about last Saturday Night’s gig, the Belmont 16s gig coming up and the single and album. We will play some of the classics from Mi-Sex as well as the new single.
Guests in the studio tonight will be young Central Coast mum, Renae Curby, followed by the band Mirrabooka.
Renae Curby is a young mum, juggling her family duties with an ambition to sing and to write her own songs. Renae braved it last night (Tuesday) and attended the Open Mic at The Coast Hotel at Budgewoi, getting up on stage and belting out a song or two. Renae enjoys singing a variety of covers and is working on one or two originals songs as well. Young Corey Turner will be accompanying Renae in the studio tonight on guitar and together they will perform three songs live and we will chat about Renae’s music and hear her life story. Renae’s visit is brought to you by Cardiff Golf Driving Range.
Central Coast Band, Mirrabooka, brought to you by VIBES atThe Coast Hotel Budgewoi, have released a brand new album, River Of Dreams, chocker-block with 16 tracks. Mirrabooka is a four-piece band playing sweet original tunes and popular hits, using a wide variety of musical instruments and vocals. The band is made up of two husband and wife teams, Liz and Rob Kitney and Rosemary and David Glenn Ewing. Some of the instruments that this talented group use include your usual guitars and drums, mixed in with ukulele, mandolin, flutes, penny whistles and banjo-lele, among others. Together they create some beautiful tunes. Liz and Rob Kitney from the band will join us in the studio and we will hear a live performance as well as play some tracks off the new album River Of Dreams. Rob also comes with some fantastic stories from the music industry, we will try and drag some of those out of him. We will also have a chat about the Central Coast Ukelele Festival coming up in September and how listeners can get involved in their local ukulele clubs.
