Last Friday night the Newcastle Live crew headed into Hamilton for a Friday night feast. Our destination has become a mecca for local beer lovers who are keen on trying a new Aussie or international brew whilst noshing on the perfect accompaniment.
What they say about The Blink Monk
From The Blink Monk website
Predominantly, our focus is on showcasing the best and the newest from the Australian craft beer scene and doing so with panache! We also provide for the lovers of cider, and have a tempting range of local wines. We have 12 taps of delicious craft beer and cider, our menu consists of beer-friendly fare that is simple, fresh and tasty. We are staffed with a fun team of friendly, knowledgeable lovers of beer and food and plan to intertwine these two necessities in life harmoniously within the warm and inviting walls of The Blind Monk.
Our night at The Blind Monk
Arriving around 6:30pm, we took a seat in the front bar to chat with manager, Philip Elsley about the idea behind the Beaumont Street bar. Phil told us about their simple philosophy of matching their beer, cider, cocktail and whiskey, with a menu of honest and tasty food. We had a chat about some of the new beers he has on tap and his desire to see Hamilton’s main street return to its glory days of the late 90s. Then it was down to business…
We tried a range of craft beers from The Blind Monk’s vast menu, but our favourite would have to be The Grainfed’s ‘Quiet One’. It’s a Dark Pale Ale brewed by locals. Phil tells us they use a bunch of different malts in concert with English and American hops. It was absolutely delicious and went perfectly with the White Bait we’d ordered from the ‘Snack & Share’ section of the menu.
Then it was time for the main event, the main course. We decided to go with pizza, because who doesn’t love pizza with beer? We asked the staff behind the bar which they’d recommend, and without any hesitation they suggested the slow cooked lamb and the salmon special. And, spoiler alert, they were 100% right.
Shortly after heading back to our table with a freshly replenished beverage, our pizza arrived. The crust was crispy without being dry, and while there were plenty of toppings, it didn’t over crowd the delicious pie.
The Blind Monk Verdict
We only just touched the sides of what this place has to offer, and we’re looking forward to heading back there for more. You really get the feeling these guys care about what they’re putting up on the bar, and that careful consideration has been made to ensure everything on offer is complimentary and builds a great atmosphere.
