Musicians young and old are invited to dust off their drums, tune their triangles and arrange their acapella for a chance to win the Midnight Oil cover song competition hosted by 1233 ABC Newcastle and aptly titled Oils Ain’t Oils.
The top three entries will be professionally recorded by 1233 ABC Newcastle radio and played live on air. The winner of Oils Ain’t Oils will perform at the VIP Opening of The Making of Midnight Oil exhibition at Newcastle Museum on 19 February 2015 in front of members of the band and invited guests.
Museum Deputy Director Julie Baird said the Museum is excited and proud to be hosting The Making of Midnight Oil exhibition in Newcastle from 21 February – 10 May 2015.
“Midnight Oil holds a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of Australians,” she said. “Locals will remember them from their early years performing in Newcastle pubs such as The Ambassador and The Palais as well as from their amazing performance at the 1990 Newcastle Earthquake Relief Concert.”
“The Oils Ain’t Oils cover song competition is a great way to be reinspired by the power and the passion of this iconic Australian band. I look forward to hearing the winner play at the Museum.”
Phil Ashley-Brown, Manager of 1233 ABC Newcastle, said entrants should make their cover song their own and create a piece that is unique and unexpected.
“We really hope to get a big variety of songs and styles entered into the competition,” he said. “It is a great opportunity for emerging and existing musicians to get on air as well as meet members of Midnight Oil.”
“Whether that’s an all girls’ choir singing ‘US Forces’, a ukulele group strumming ‘The Power & the Passion’, a high school band taking on ‘Short Memory’ or your groovy granddad rocking out to ‘Redneck Wonderland’ on the spoons – we want to hear it.”
“Keep your recording simple, use a smart phone, tablet, webcam or any basic recording device. A video recording is preferred but if you can only manage an audio recording that’s okay!”
Entries are open from 1 – 21 November 2014 and anyone interested in entering should visit the promotions page at abc.net/au/Newcastle for competition terms and conditions.
